Opera is a fusion of music, literature, drama and stage artistry — and the aria is its most moving form of expression, each melody carrying a character's emotion, fate and the echo of an era. The Beauty of Arias is a curated series under Sounds of Life devoted to classic vocal works, drawing chiefly on the most representative and beloved arias in opera history while also including a few equally moving operetta numbers and art songs, explored through "one piece, one story, one emotional experience." Each entry unfolds around a classic piece — its background, musical character, recommended classic recordings, and the reflections it inspires — so readers can feel the emotion and power behind the art while enjoying the music.

001 | "Casta Diva" — A Prayer and a Divide Under the Moonlight
(From the opera Norma)
Listen to the Classics
Aria Overview
Norma
Vincenzo Bellini
Opera: Norma
Composer: Vincenzo Bellini
Premiered: 1831
Character: Norma, high priestess of the Gallic Druids
Where it appears: Act I, as Norma prays to the moon goddess under moonlight
Original language: Italian — "Casta Diva" is itself the opening line of the text, meaning "chaste goddess." Opera arias are conventionally titled after their first line of text rather than given a separate name.
In essence: Norma prays to the chaste moon goddess, asking her to cast her silver light over the land and calm the unrest among her people — while quietly asking the goddess to also still the inner turmoil stirred by her forbidden love for the Roman proconsul Pollione.
The Opera's Story
Norma is the high priestess of the Gallic Druids, tasked with leading her people against Roman occupation — yet she has secretly fallen in love with the Roman proconsul Pollione and borne him two children. Her people are eager to rise up, but Norma keeps delaying the call to war because of this hidden love. "Casta Diva" is the moment she steps out of the temple to lead the people in prayer under the moonlight — outwardly a solemn religious rite, but inwardly the unspoken struggle of a priestess torn between faith, duty and love.
Musical Appreciation
This aria has remained a classic for nearly two centuries because it makes "simplicity" the ultimate challenge — the melody itself is restrained and calm, with no flashy bravura, yet it demands extremely long breath lines, precise intonation and delicate ornamentation (fioritura) from the singer, where the slightest flaw is instantly exposed. This is exactly why "Casta Diva" is regarded as the touchstone for whether a bel canto soprano has truly "arrived."

❤️ The author's personal pick: Maria Callas's 1958 live recording from the Paris Opera, featured on the album "La Grande Nuit de l'Opéra." There's a real story behind this recording: in 1957, Callas was forced to stop mid-performance of Norma in Rome due to vocal trouble, and was harshly criticized by the Italian press, her reputation at a low point. A year later, she chose to make her comeback at the Paris Opera — a concert the press called "the greatest show in the world," attended by French President René Coty and broadcast live across Europe via Eurovision. Compared to the 1954 studio recording's polished perfection, this live version carries the raw weight of a real comeback.
⭐ Consensus pick: Maria Callas — her 1954 studio recording is widely regarded as the definitive interpretation, rich in emotional depth and dramatic tension, shaping how the aria has been understood ever since.
A Personal Note
Every time I hear "Casta Diva," I think of those moments in life when we "must appear strong" — at work, giving others confidence; at home, carrying responsibility — yet deep down, everyone longs for a sliver of moonlight, a moment to set down every role and simply breathe, simply pray. In front of her people, Norma is a priestess, a leader; only within this melody does she become an ordinary woman who can be afraid, who can struggle, who can be vulnerable. Perhaps true strength isn't never wavering — it's allowing yourself one honest moment of vulnerability under the moonlight, and then still choosing to carry the weight and keep walking forward.

Gaetano Donizetti
Opera: La Fille du Régiment (The Daughter of the Regiment) — originally French; the Italian version is titled La Figlia del Reggimento
Composer: Gaetano Donizetti
Premiered: 1840, at the Opéra-Comique in Paris
Character: Tonio, a tenor in love with Marie, an orphan raised by a French regiment
Where it appears: Act I — Tonio has enlisted to be near Marie and just passed the soldiers' test; formally accepted as her "future husband," he bursts into this joyful aria
Original language: French — one of the few operas Donizetti wrote in French rather than Italian. "Ah! mes amis" ("Ah, my friends") is the opening line.
The Opera's Story
Marie is an orphan rescued on the battlefield and raised collectively by a regiment of French soldiers, cherished by all as the troop's "daughter" — regiment rule holds that she may only marry one of their own. Tonio, a young peasant, falls for her and, determined to win her hand honestly, enlists and later saves the entire regiment in battle. Moved by his courage and sincerity, the soldiers formally accept him and bless the match. "Ah! Mes amis" captures Tonio's overwhelming joy the moment he learns he has been accepted and will marry Marie — the first half poured out in gratitude to his "comrades," the second half ("Pour mon âme") erupting into a string of soaring high notes carrying this joy to its peak.
Musical Appreciation
This aria is near-legendary in vocal circles because its "Pour mon âme" section demands nine High Cs in rapid succession — most arias let a singer reach for one or two high notes as a climax; Donizetti demands nine, each bright, solid, and seemingly effortless. This is why the piece is jokingly called "the tenor's Mount Everest": whether a bel canto tenor can nail all nine High Cs has become an unofficial, very public proving ground.

❤️ The author's personal pick: Luciano Pavarotti — at his 1972 Metropolitan Opera performance he delivered all nine High Cs bright and rock-steady; the ovation ran past a minute and he took 17 curtain calls, a Met record at the time, earning him the nickname "King of the High Cs."
A Personal Note
Every time I hear those nine High Cs bursting forth one after another, my mind turns to those moments defined by a settled sense of direction and dedicated fulfillment — only by holding fast to a goal and remaining steadfast in effort, attending to every task with care and quietly shouldering every responsibility, does one arrive at recognition as naturally as water finding its course. Tonio's acceptance into the regiment was never a matter of luck — it was he himself who stepped forward, earning this recognition through sincerity and genuine merit. This aria carries a moving power: what is gained through hard-won effort brings the deepest peace and joy; and the acceptance won through sincerity and effort is all the more precious — the truest, most solid reward of all.

Rigoletto
Giuseppe Verdi
Opera: Rigoletto
Composer: Giuseppe Verdi
Premiered: 1851, at Teatro La Fenice in Venice; libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, after Victor Hugo's play Le roi s'amuse
Character: Gilda — the daughter Rigoletto has kept hidden from the world
Where it appears: Act I — the Duke of Mantua, disguised as a poor student calling himself "Gualtier Maldè," has just declared his love and left; alone, Gilda repeats this assumed name over and over
Original language: Italian — "Caro nome" means "dear name"
The Opera's Story
Rigoletto is the Duke of Mantua's court jester, mocking the courtiers for a living and earning their hatred in return. He keeps his daughter Gilda hidden from the world, allowing her to see almost no one. Yet the philandering Duke discovers her anyway, disguising himself as a poor student to win her heart. "Caro nome" is the moment after he leaves — Gilda, still unaware of who he really is, lost entirely in this newfound feeling, her mind filled with nothing but his name. This innocence stands in the sharpest possible contrast to the abduction, betrayal and death still to come.
Musical Appreciation
《Caro nome》
"Caro nome" is one of the great touchstones for coloratura sopranos — its difficulty lies not in bravura but in restrained virtuosity: the melody floats lightly, ornament after ornament, while never losing its girlish, blushing purity of tone. At the very end, Verdi writes a delicate trill on a high note that fades almost to nothing, as if Gilda's thoughts were drifting away with the name itself — an ending built on fragility rather than force, and all the more demanding for it.
Recommended Recordings
⭐ Consensus pick: Edita Gruberová — widely regarded as one of the definitive modern Gildas, with crystalline tone and exquisite pianissimo control.
A Personal Note
This aria always reminds me of the giddiness of falling for someone new — replaying an offhand remark, repeating a name silently in your head, as if saying it again and again could make that person more real. Gilda has no idea the name she loves is false, yet this instinct to hold on to it is so honest, so unguarded. Perhaps love, in its earliest form, isn't about truly knowing who someone is — it's about allowing your heart to race, without reservation, for someone you barely know yet.

Character: Nemorino, a tenor — a poor peasant in love with the landowner Adina
Where it appears: Act II — Nemorino glimpses a single furtive tear in Adina's eye and realizes, at last, that she has loved him all along
Original language: Italian — "Una furtiva lagrima" means "a furtive tear"
The Opera's Story
Nemorino is hopelessly in love with Adina, who seems indifferent and is set to marry the vain Sergeant Belcore. Desperate, Nemorino buys a supposed "love potion" (really just wine) from a traveling quack, and, emboldened, feigns nonchalance toward Adina — which only piques her curiosity. When she learns he even enlisted to raise money for more "potion," she is finally moved by his clumsy devotion. "Una furtiva lagrima" captures the moment Nemorino glimpses that tear in her eye — still unaware of the full story, simply, quietly certain at last: she loves him.
Musical Appreciation
This aria has remained beloved for nearly two centuries because it renders joy with such restraint — no exuberant outburst, only a tender bassoon-and-clarinet introduction and a melody like one long sigh. This way of expressing overwhelming feeling through quietness captures something universal: the moment we truly realize we are loved rarely arrives as a shout of triumph — it's closer to a wordless, almost tearful tremor.

❤️ The author's personal pick: Luciano Pavarotti — his interpretation is widely regarded as the gold standard, warm and richly toned.
A Personal Note
This aria taught me that the most moving expressions of love are rarely grand declarations — they're small, unguarded details: a tear, a glance, a sentence left unfinished. Nemorino does nothing at all; he simply happens to see that flash of tears, and it's enough. Perhaps the truest certainties in life work the same way — not announced loudly by someone else, but caught by us, quietly, in a fleeting moment we were paying just enough attention to notice.

Carmen
Georges Bizet
Habanera"是舞曲节奏名称(源自古巴),唱词开篇原句是"L'amour est un oiseau rebelle"(爱情是一只不肯驯服的鸟)
Opera: Carmen
Composer: Georges Bizet
Premiered: 1875, at the Opéra-Comique in Paris
Character: Carmen, a mezzo-soprano — a free-spirited Roma woman working in a Seville cigarette factory
Where it appears: Act I — Carmen's entrance, sung before the soldiers and admirers gathered outside the factory
Original language: French — "Habanera" names the dance rhythm (of Cuban origin); the text opens "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" ("Love is a bird that won't be tamed")
The Opera's Story
Carmen works in a Seville cigarette factory, unbound by convention and fiercely free. When the soldiers tease her about when she'll fall in love, she sings this song, declaring that love is like a bird that cannot be tamed. As she finishes, she tosses a flower to a young soldier, Don José — an offhand gesture that becomes the first spark of his obsession and downfall, setting the entire tragedy in motion.
Musical Appreciation
The magic of this aria lies in how Bizet pairs the exotic habanera rhythm with a melody that slides chromatically downward, letting listeners "understand" Carmen almost without words — languid, dangerous, seductive, utterly uncontrollable. Interestingly, the tune isn't Bizet's own invention but an adaptation of a song by the Spanish composer Sebastián Yradier — yet this instinct for making borrowed material entirely his own is exactly what made "Habanera" one of the most recognizable melodies in Western classical music.
Recommended Recordings
❤️ The author's personal pick: Maria Callas — a cool, defiant edge in her voice makes Carmen's dangerous freedom utterly convincing, and this recording is widely regarded as the classic rendition as well.
A Personal Note
When Carmen sings that love is a bird that won't be tamed, she could just as easily be singing about a person's own nature — something rarely changed by anyone, and not something that should be. She never cares what others think of her, never bends to society's idea of "propriety," and lives and loves entirely on her own terms, whatever the cost. It reminds me: rather than wear ourselves out chasing others' approval or squeezing into some expected mold, it's better to make peace with who we truly are — being distinctive, being different, is itself a kind of beauty. Rather than wait to be approved of, or tamed, by anyone, it's braver to bloom fully as ourselves: love yourself, be yourself, and chase a dream that belongs to no one else. Of course, staying true to yourself doesn't mean going without care — real freedom means being clear-eyed about who you are, not recklessness without regard for consequence.

Violetta is Paris's most dazzling courtesan, living for pleasure while privately aware that consumption will soon end her life. Alfredo is the one admirer among many whose love is genuine. At the party, he uses the toast as a veiled declaration; Violetta answers in kind, and the guests join in chorus, lifting the scene to its most jubilant peak. "Libiamo" is the brightest, most carefree moment in the whole opera — even as a doomed love is only just beginning.
Musical Appreciation
This drinking song is the most widely known melody in the entire opera, and one of the most famous in all of opera — even people who've never seen an opera have likely heard its buoyant triple-time waltz in a film or at a wedding. Verdi renders this surface joy so vividly precisely so that Violetta's later, sudden fall feels all the heavier by contrast — the brighter this song shines, the deeper the tragedy that follows.

What moves me most about this drinking song is its very brightness — when Violetta raises her glass and sings, she already knows her days are numbered; cup after cup is less about revelry than about drowning her sorrows, using the noise and laughter to forget, if only for a moment, the weight of illness and fate. So many people are the same way: the brighter the smile, the less it may reveal about what's happening inside. We shouldn't let appearances alone fool us, or judge how well someone is truly doing by their smile, or feel ashamed of our own occasional fragility — everyone carries a weight that belongs only to them.

After the party, Violetta is left alone in the salon. Alfredo's sincere declaration stirs, for the first time, the possibility of being truly loved — before she catches herself: given who she is, and her illness, how could real love ever be hers? She sings "Sempre libera," resolving to keep living for pleasure alone. But just as her resolve peaks, Alfredo's voice drifts in from outside, repeating his declaration — and the resolve she's just made begins, once again, to crack.
Musical Appreciation
"Sempre libera" is a dual trial of technique and drama — lyrical and searching in its first half, then suddenly erupting into fiendishly difficult coloratura, often capped with a traditionally interpolated high E-flat, all while never losing the character's inner conflict. Alfredo's voice drifting in from outside is a stroke of genius: one line declaring freedom, the other declaring love, and the audience can hear clearly that Violetta has not, in the end, convinced herself.

The more forcefully Violetta insists on her freedom, the more a single line of love song from outside the window undoes her — and it feels so true to life, because we've all had moments like this: declaring "I don't need it" with total conviction, while something in us has already quietly given way. Sometimes the strength of our defenses is itself proof of how deep the longing runs. This aria has taught me to be more honest with myself — better to admit I want to be truly loved than to keep insisting I don't care.

Princess Turandot is beautiful but merciless, sworn never to submit to any man: solve her three riddles and win her hand; fail, and pay with your life. Calaf answers correctly through his wit alone, leaving Turandot terrified and defiant. He then offers a near-reckless wager: if she can discover his true name by dawn, he will accept death. The whole city searches through the night, no one daring to sleep. "Nessun dorma" is Calaf alone in that silence, certain that at dawn he will triumph.

This is arguably the most famous aria in all of opera — a melody that climbs relentlessly, culminating on "Vincerò" with a triumphant, sustained high note that feels almost ceremonial.
What moves me most about this aria is the loneliness behind that final "Vincerò" — Calaf, with the whole city convinced he cannot win, standing alone under the stars, willing himself forward. So many of life's important decisions begin this way: no one there to confirm you're right, just you, in the middle of the night, telling yourself "I can" again and again. This aria convinces me that real conviction never needs an audience — it speaks to yourself first, and only then finds the strength to speak to the world.

This aria is Puccini's melodic gift at its most direct — warm and effortlessly flowing, it wins the listener over almost instantly.
Rodolfo takes Mimì's cold hand and says nothing about it, choosing instead to talk about his dreams — that small delay is so endearing. We've probably all had a moment like this: meeting someone who makes our heart quicken, and instinctively looking for reasons to make the encounter last a little longer. This aria reminds me that a good beginning isn't about rushing to say everything at once — it's about being willing to slow down, letting two people come to know each other through small moments of closeness.

After Rodolfo shares his dreams as a poet, Mimì answers with the same honesty: her real name is Lucia, though the neighbors call her Mimì; she embroiders for a living, loves growing flowers on her windowsill, and cherishes the first light of spring. Her introduction is as plain as everyday conversation, yet it quietly reveals both her loneliness and her love of small beauties — and gently foreshadows the illness that will end her life too soon.
Musical Appreciation
Compared to Rodolfo's aria, "Mi chiamano Mimì" is more restrained and unadorned — and it is precisely this plainness that makes it so touching.
Mimì's self-introduction is as plain as small talk — she simply loves embroidering, loves the flowers on her windowsill, loves the first light of spring — and it's exactly these small affections that make her feel so real and endearing. This aria reminds me that you don't need a remarkable story to move someone; being able to speak plainly about the small things you truly care about is, in itself, a rare kind of honesty. So much of life's weight, it turns out, lives in these unremarkable, everyday details.

Friends call up from outside, urging Rodolfo down, but he can't bear to break this newly blooming feeling, and sings this duet to Mimì by moonlight. As it ends, they leave arm in arm, an offstage chorus faintly echoing "Amor! Amor!" — casting this new love in a soft, moonlit glow.
Musical Appreciation
This duet is one of Puccini's most intoxicating depictions of falling in love — two melodic lines begin apart, then draw closer, intertwine, and finally merge, the music itself enacting the metaphor of two hearts becoming one. The treatment is remarkably restrained, softening gradually toward the close as the voices seem to dissolve into the night and fade into silence.

Friends are calling from below, and still Rodolfo can't bring himself to leave, wanting just one more moment in the moonlight — that feeling of "I know I should go, but let me stay one minute longer" may be the most precious part of love's beginning. Rosina is kept under the watch of her greedy guardian Dr. Bartolo, who intends to marry her himself and claim her dowry. Count Almaviva, disguised as the poor student "Lindoro," has been courting her with song. "Una voce poco fa" is Rosina's inner monologue — "I am gentle... but touch my weak spot, and I become a viper" — revealing the steel beneath her softness, and setting up the cunning she'll later use to outwit her guardian.
Musical Appreciation
The magic of this aria lies in how precisely it captures Rosina's dual nature through music alone — lyrical and blushing at first, then suddenly erupting into fiendish coloratura that hints at real stubbornness underneath. Rossini needs almost no words to tell us: she is far shrewder and more determined than she first appears.

Every time I hear Rosina sing "I am gentle... but touch my weak spot and I become a viper," I smile — gentleness has never meant weakness. Often, someone can afford to be easygoing precisely because they know exactly where their own line is, without needing to prove it through constant toughness. This aria reminds me: you don't need to be sharp-edged everywhere to have a mind of your own. Real composure is being soft when softness is called for, and firm when firmness is — nothing more, nothing less.

Der Opernball is a classic Viennese operetta romantic comedy: several married couples, testing each other's fidelity at a masked ball, arrange "secret rendezvous" that spiral into misunderstanding — only to discover, after all the intrigue, that the person they'd been so carefully testing was their own spouse all along. "Im chambre séparée" is the opera's most famous number — two people in a private room, starting out testing a stranger, singing their way toward recognizing each other, a near-crisis transformed into a sweet reaffirmation of love.
Musical Appreciation
This waltz-duet is one of the defining melodies from the golden age of Viennese operetta — a lilting triple-time waltz that captures, with real finesse, the turn from flirtatious suspicion to sweet recognition. "Im chambre séparée" has long outlived its original operetta, remaining a concert-hall favorite still heard today at events like the Vienna New Year's Concert.

What I find most delightful about this piece is the twist of going the long way round only to discover that the person you were looking for was there all along. In a marriage, or any long relationship, we sometimes catch ourselves chasing novelty elsewhere, forgetting that the person right in front of us may still hold sides we've never fully noticed. This duet reminds me that real romance doesn't always need strangeness or thrill — sometimes, simply looking at the person beside you with fresh eyes can bring its own "oh, it's you" kind of wonder.

The Opera's Story
To protect the Germont family's reputation, Violetta has left Alfredo and returned alone to Paris, her illness worsening rapidly. Reading Germont's letter, she learns Alfredo now knows the truth and is on his way to see her — though she scarcely dares hope she'll live to see him arrive. "Addio del passato" is her gentle farewell, in this waiting and despair, to a life once full of glamour and illusion.
Musical Appreciation
In stark contrast to the brilliant, high-flying "Sempre libera" of Act I, "Addio del passato" abandons virtuosity almost entirely, writing the calm and frailty of a fading life in near-whispered tones. Rather than dramatizing death with anguished outburst, Verdi lets an almost transparent quietness let the audience feel Violetta's life ebbing away in real time.

There's no wailing here, no collapse — only a quiet acceptance, and that quietness moves me more than any loud grief could. Life always has chapters we must eventually set down — a relationship, a job, a version of ourselves — and rather than clutching at them, there's something to learn from Violetta's soft "farewell to the past," making room in the heart for whatever comes next.

Overcome with remorse upon learning the truth, Alfredo rushes back to Violetta's side. Reunited at her bedside, past misunderstandings dissolve in their embrace. Full of hope, he promises that once she recovers, they'll leave together for the countryside to start anew. "Parigi, o cara" blends the joy of reunion with dreams for a future that, as the audience knows, will never come — soon after this duet ends, Violetta dies in his arms.
Musical Appreciation
This duet is bright, warm, and full of anticipation, almost letting us forget the lovers stand in death's shadow. It's precisely this beauty-against-cruelty contrast that reveals Verdi's extraordinary dramatic power — rather than foreshadowing death through sorrowful melody, he lets the couple weave an impossible dream together, a romance born facing death that cuts deeper than any open lament ever could.

Both of them likely sense, deep down, how this ends — and still they take the time to paint each other a future they'll never get to live. That tenderness, choosing to hope anyway, moves me deeply. Life is often like this: some promises carry their worth the moment they're spoken, simply because, right then, we believed them. Rather than refusing to hope because the outcome is uncertain, perhaps it's better to do as they did — take this moment of longing and live it as fully as if it were already true.

Premiered: 1900, at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, after the play by Victorien Sardou
Character: Mario Cavaradossi, a tenor — a painter, Tosca's lover
Where it appears: Act I — painting in a church, Cavaradossi muses on the strange harmony between the fair-haired noblewoman in his portrait and his own dark-eyed beloved, Tosca
Original language: Italian — "Recondita armonia" means "hidden harmony"
The Opera's Story
Cavaradossi is secretly helping the just-escaped political prisoner Angelotti hide. The Madonna he's painting has unintentionally taken on the fair features of Angelotti's sister, in contrast to his dark-haired beloved, the famous singer Tosca. "Recondita armonia" is his musing before the canvas — two such different kinds of beauty in the world, and yet, in his heart, both converge on his complete devotion to Tosca.
Musical Appreciation
This aria is a model of Puccini's lyric gift — warm and flowing, sketching Cavaradossi's sensitive, artistic inner life in just a few minutes. Without any bravura climax, its melodic charm alone injects a moment of tenderness into the intensely dramatic Tosca — the last purely peaceful soliloquy before tragedy begins to unfold.

Cavaradossi looks at the fair-haired beauty in his painting, and yet his mind is entirely on Tosca — that state of looking elsewhere while your heart stays fixed on one person feels so real to me. We encounter all kinds of beauty in life, but what truly settles the heart is that, no matter how many views we've seen, the one we keep returning to never changes. This aria taught me that real devotion is never threatened by comparison — it has already claimed an irreplaceable place in the heart.

To save Cavaradossi, Tosca is forced to endure Scarpia's threats while her lover is tortured in the next room, pushed nearly to breaking. Scarpia offers a bargain: her body for Cavaradossi's freedom. Cornered, Tosca questions heaven — she has lived a devout life, given herself to art and love alone, so why must she suffer this? Soon after, she kills Scarpia.
Musical Appreciation
《Vissi d'arte》
"Vissi d'arte" is one of the great soprano soliloquies — nearly suspended from the drama's action, it is Tosca's purest outpouring to heaven in extremity, building from confusion and pain to a near-broken questioning. This "stillness as devastation" approach has made it one of opera's most frequently performed standalone arias.

Tosca's questioning resonates with me deeply — there are moments in life when we've clearly done everything right, lived with a clean conscience, and still face unfair blows. That kind of grievance has nowhere to go except toward the sky, toward ourselves. But I also see another kind of strength in this aria: after questioning, Tosca doesn't simply wait for pity — she finds her own way out. It's alright to let yourself feel wronged, but remember too — in the end, it's usually ourselves who do the saving.

"E lucevan le stelle" is his tender lament, in his final hour, for a love and a life about to be lost.

This is one of Puccini's most deeply affecting tenor arias — a mournful clarinet opens the scene before the voice enters, building from tender recollection to the near-anguished cry "never have I loved life so much."
Les Contes d'Hoffmann follows the poet's three failed loves across his life; Olympia is the first. The inventor Spalanzani presents her as his own daughter, and Hoffmann, wearing special spectacles, falls for her instantly. "Les oiseaux dans la charmille" is the performance's centerpiece — Olympia's song suddenly stalls mid-phrase, needing to be secretly rewound to continue, as the other guests exchange knowing looks while Hoffmann alone remains oblivious, utterly enchanted.
Musical Appreciation
This aria is one of the cleverest fusions of coloratura technique and characterization in opera — Offenbach deliberately writes the melody as mechanical and repetitive, with a mid-song "malfunction" and sudden loss of speed that musically mimics a winding-down toy. The singer needs not just dazzling technique but precise comic timing — a benchmark test of both.

Hoffmann, wearing spectacles that let him "see a living woman," has no idea he's fallen for a doll — which makes me think of how often, in life, we fall not for who someone actually is, but for an idealized image we've projected onto them.
After two failed loves — Olympia and the frail singer Antonia — Hoffmann arrives in Venice, drawn to the courtesan Giulietta, unaware she is controlled by a sorcerer who preys on victims through seduction, stealing their souls. "Belle nuit" is the tender prelude to this fatal encounter — a melody that seems to celebrate love and beauty while quietly foreshadowing deception.
Musical Appreciation
This barcarolle is among the most recognizable melodies in classical music — its gently rocking rhythm and two intertwining vocal lines conjure a hazy, romantic, faintly fateful night. That almost-too-beautiful quality is exactly what foreshadows the illusory nature of Giulietta's affection.

❤️ The author's personal pick: Fatma Said and partner — clear, warm-toned, capturing the duality of beauty and hidden danger with real delicacy, and it happens to be the version listeners most widely favor as well.
A Personal Note
This barcarolle is so beautiful it lowers your guard, and it's exactly that "too perfect" quality that makes me stay alert. Beginnings that feel almost impossibly good are sometimes worth a second look — not to dismiss the beauty, but to keep a little clarity while enjoying the moment. A truly solid connection rarely needs an unreal, filtered kind of beauty to hold it together.

Opera: Gianni Schicchi (the third panel of Puccini's Il trittico, a comic opera)
Composer: Giacomo Puccini
Premiered: 1918, at the Metropolitan Opera in New York; based on an episode from Dante's Inferno
Character: Lauretta, a soprano — Gianni Schicchi's daughter

Original language: Italian — "O mio babbino caro" means "Oh, my dear little father"
The Opera's Story
The Donati family, discovering their inheritance has all gone to a monastery, calls on the clever Gianni Schicchi to impersonate the deceased and dictate a new will — but Schicchi refuses, still stung by the family's long-standing disdain for his humble origins. His daughter Lauretta, in love with the family's young Rinuccio and fearing the marriage is now off, tearfully threatens to throw herself in the river if she cannot marry him. "O mio babbino caro" is this plea — and in two short minutes, it melts her father's resolve.
Musical Appreciation
This is one of Puccini's shortest, most universally known melodies — barely two minutes, with no bravura high notes, yet it has become one of the most beloved soprano arias in the world through its pure, flowing melody and near-childlike directness. Its power lies exactly in that simplicity — a daughter's most immediate, urgent plea to her father, an emotion so universal it crosses easily beyond the opera house.

Lauretta melts her father's resolve in just two minutes — which convinces me that the most powerful communication isn't polished argument, but the courage to state plainly, to the people closest to us, what we actually want. We often hide our real desires, afraid of seeming selfish or of being refused, but this aria reminds me that being honest with the people who care about us is usually what gets us heard — and granted.

Opera: Madama Butterfly
Composer: Giacomo Puccini
Premiered: 1904, at Teatro alla Scala in Milan
Character: Cio-Cio-San ("Madama Butterfly"), a soprano — a young Japanese woman married to American naval officer Pinkerton
Where it appears: Act II — Pinkerton promised to return "when the robins nest"; three years of silence have passed, and Cio-Cio-San still believes he will come back
Original language: Italian — "Un bel dì vedremo" means "one fine day, we shall see"
The Opera's Story
Cio-Cio-San broke with her family to marry Pinkerton. Soon after the wedding, he shipped back to America, leaving only a promise. Three years on, her maid Suzuki gently urges her to face reality, but Cio-Cio-San refuses to give up hope. "Un bel dì vedremo" is her word-by-word vision of his return — a devout certainty that, against the audience's foreknowledge of the truth, becomes the opera's most heartbreaking moment.
Musical Appreciation
This is among Puccini's most celebrated soprano arias — the melody builds from a near-whisper to an emotionally overwhelming climax, precisely tracing how Cio-Cio-San's calm imagining is gradually consumed by her own hope. Puccini deliberately preserves an innocent conviction, undimmed by doubt — and this pure hope is exactly what gives the opera's tragedy its devastating power.

Cio-Cio-San imagines every detail of her waiting so vividly — the smoke on the horizon, the ship docking, her husband climbing the hill — and that devotion aches, making me consider the weight of "believing" itself. We too are often waiting on uncertain outcomes in life; rather than anxiously second-guessing, perhaps it's worth learning to hold that waiting with the same seriousness and care — if only to honor the sincerity we've put into it.

Opera: Lakmé
Composer: Léo Delibes
Premiered: 1883, at the Opéra-Comique in Paris; set in British colonial India
Characters: Lakmé, a soprano — daughter of a Brahmin priest; Mallika, a mezzo-soprano — her attendant
Where it appears: Act I — the two go together to gather flowers by the river, singing this duet as they drift along in a boat
Original language: French — commonly known in English simply as "The Flower Duet"
The Opera's Story
Lakmé is the daughter of a Brahmin priest who despises the colonizers and forbids her any contact with the outside world. She and her lifelong companion Mallika go together to gather jasmine and roses by the river, singing of its beauty as they drift along in a boat. This tranquil duet is her last carefree moment before tragedy — soon she will meet the British officer Gerald and fall into a love doomed by hatred and colonial divide.
Musical Appreciation
This duet is among the most recognizable melodies in classical music — two voices interweaving in thirds, evoking rippling water and drifting petals. Delibes's exotic orchestral colors paint a serene riverside scene, and the piece has long escaped the opera house, appearing widely in films and advertisements — its melody alone is enough to draw listeners in instantly.
A Personal Note
This duet reminds me of the ease of simply being with a close friend, not needing to say much, just taking in the same view together. Lakmé and Mallika's afternoon on the river feels almost extravagantly peaceful, and it reminds me that these moments — nothing to worry about, just flowers and clouds and each other — deserve to be treasured on purpose, because it's often these ordinary-seeming days that, looking back, turn out to matter most.

生活札记 021 · Life Notes 021加州之旅|一路风景,一路滋味点击查看 ▾A California Journey — Scenery All the Way, Flavors All the Way2026年9月23日-10月4日 · September 23 – October 4, 2026
Traveling, of course, is about seeing the scenery. Watching the sea, the mountains, the cities and small towns; walking into unfamiliar streets, meeting different people and cultures. But I've come to feel more and more that travel shouldn't have to be an "ordeal." Rushing from place to place to fit in a few more stops, eating something quick just to save time, checking off sights along the way without ever really sitting down to feel a place. I prefer another way of traveling: take the scenery in properly when it's worth seeing, walk the road slowly when it's worth walking, and when it's time to eat, really sit down and enjoy a meal.
Because food itself is also a way of understanding a place. An old shop that's been around for generations is part of the local culture; a dinner at a table by the street is the way a small town lives at night; a plate of fresh, simple seafood can let us truly feel the taste of a seaside city. So on this California trip, we took in the scenery all the way, and went looking for flavors worth remembering all the way too. It wasn't about deliberately planning a "food checklist" — it was about encountering, in the places we passed through, some flavors worth holding onto.
Solvang 从丹麦小镇的味道开始 · Starting with the Taste of a Danish Village
Arriving in Solvang, a town full of Danish character, we walked into Olsen's Danish Village Bakery. There were plenty of classic Danish pastries, butter cookies and other Danish treats. Besides the classic Danish butter cookies, we also tried a few almond-flavored Danish pastries, one of which was especially good. Walking through a town with so much Danish character, picking up a traditional local pastry and tasting it as you walk, you end up carrying a bit of the place's flavor home with you too. I love this kind of small ritual in travel — traveling isn't only about seeing a place, it can also start with getting to know it through taste.

Solvang 的夜晚 一顿很浪漫的晚餐 · An Evening in Solvang, A Very Romantic Dinner
In the evening, we went to The Gathering Table, an Asian & French fusion restaurant. That night we sat at a table by the street, eating while watching the small-town scene outside. The sky slowly darkened, the streetlights came on, passersby walked by — the lights, the street, the food, and the company all came together to make one of the most beautiful nights of the whole trip.
I've always felt that romance while traveling doesn't have to be grand. Sometimes, it's simply finding a restaurant you like in an unfamiliar town, sitting down, having a proper meal, and watching the town slowly settle into night — that moment is travel at its most comfortable.
Palo Alto Stanford 之后,一场温暖的中秋晚餐 · After Stanford, A Warm Mid-Autumn Dinner
After walking around the Stanford area in Palo Alto, we went to INDO Restaurant & Lounge. It happened to be the Mid-Autumn Festival that day, and during dinner two or three musicians were playing softly in the restaurant — the music wasn't loud, more like a natural backdrop woven into the meal. It was exactly this kind of well-judged music that gave the whole evening an especially relaxed, warm mood.
That day felt special — there was no grand festival celebration, but there was a very natural festive warmth. We sat together, eating and talking, with gentle music in the background, as if it were simply a comfortable, warm gathering among friends or family. By this point in the trip, the pace had slowed down too, and the mood relaxed along with the music.
I really love moments like this while traveling. Scenery is the memory of the daytime, while a dinner with music, friends and laughter becomes the memory of the night. Especially on a festival like Mid-Autumn, being able to sit down with friends, eat, talk, and feel this kind of warm, easy atmosphere is already a precious part of travel in itself. It's also made me feel more and more that travel doesn't need every day packed full — leaving a little time for a good meal, a bit of music, and some slow conversation with each other is, in fact, part of the quality of travel.

San Francisco 海鲜,也可以吃得很简单 · Seafood Can Be Simple, Too
On this trip, Fog Harbor Fish House was one that left me especially satisfied. Finding seafood this light, fresh and close to the ingredients' own flavor in America is genuinely rare. Without heavy seasoning, you could actually taste the freshness and texture of the seafood itself. Every dish we had looked irresistible, and really did taste great.
Add to that the waterfront view at Pier 39 — watching the sea while enjoying fresh seafood is, in itself, a very comfortable way to live. I've come to love this feeling more and more: good ingredients don't need much dressing up. Simple, light, fresh — and still satisfying enough. So I've remembered this place. Pasadena 旅行中偶遇的一杯抹茶 · A Matcha Found Along the Way
Not every meal on a trip has to be a full meal. In Pasadena, we happened upon nana's green tea. What surprised us most here was the Matcha Warabimochi Parfait. We ordered the largest size, and the portion was genuinely generous — matcha pudding, matcha ice cream, soft vanilla ice cream, red beans, warabimochi, cream and crunchy flakes, layer upon layer of different flavors and textures.
The aroma of the matcha, the smoothness of the ice cream, the softness of the warabimochi, plus the crunch of the flakes — one cup held so many little surprises, and it really was delicious. Dessert while traveling is sometimes exactly this: when you're tired of walking, find a comfortable place to sit, have a dessert you like, and watch the people pass by on the street. Life doesn't need to chase "big things" all the time — a small satisfaction like this is, in itself, quality.
Alhambra 一份属于老城市的冰淇淋 · An Ice Cream That Belongs to an Old Town
Back in Alhambra, we went to another old shop with a real sense of history — Fosselman's Ice Cream Co. It's been in business since 1919, and it keeps that classic, old-fashioned American ice cream parlor atmosphere. The flavors here are very rich; this time I especially recommend two we tried ourselves: Cookie Monster and Coffee & Cookies.
Cookie Monster is vanilla ice cream with Oreos, graham crackers and cookie dough — anyone who loves a cookie-ish bite will love it; Coffee & Cookies is Colombian coffee flavor paired with Oreo cookies, where the coffee aroma and the cookies blend together really well. Sometimes, what an old shop means isn't only "tasting good" — it represents the life and memory a place has built up over a long time.

Monterey Park 和朋友一起吃一顿烧肉 · A BBQ Dinner with Friends
Near the end of the trip, we had a Japanese wagyu BBQ dinner at iWagyu ATS BBQ in Monterey Park. The wagyu, the beef tongue and more were all well worth trying, and the atmosphere was comfortable too. All along this trip we'd seen so much scenery and tasted so many different flavors. Ending it by sitting down with friends for a BBQ dinner and talking over everything we'd seen along the way felt like an especially warm way to close things out.

In Closing, Travel Is Also Part of a Way of Living
I've come to feel more and more that so-called quality of life isn't about arranging life luxuriously — it's about being willing to take every present moment seriously. While traveling, really take in the scenery; when you're tired, sit down and rest; when you find a restaurant you like, eat there properly; when you spot a shop with character, stop and look; when you're with someone you like, talk a little longer.
We don't need to travel like ascetics, and we don't need to pack every minute full. Travel can have exploration, and it can have enjoyment too; you can look at mountains and the sea, and you can also sit by the street and have a meal; you can learn a place's history, and you can also feel its culture through a dish; you can walk a great many miles, and you can also set aside one evening to listen to music and have a good meal with friends.
This California trip made me more certain of one thing: the quality of life isn't about how far we've traveled, but about whether we've truly felt it. Seeing the scenery, tasting the flavors, feeling the culture, and enjoying the time spent together with people — this, perhaps, is the way of traveling I love.
生活札记 020 · Life Notes 020一段难得的相聚与陪伴点击查看 ▾A Rare Reunion, A Rare Companionship2026年9月23日-10月4日 · September 23 – October 4, 2026
From September 23rd to October 4th, a reunion brought us together for a time that was full and beautiful.
There was a California road trip we traveled together, and companionship within the city of Los Angeles too. We watched the ocean, the mountains, and the scenery together, took in art and beauty, and savored the food along the way; from the coastline to the valleys, from the city to the national parks, we moved along at our own pace, stopping and going, talking about life the whole way — sharing our experiences and feelings with each other.
I've come to feel more and more that the beauty of life doesn't necessarily come from some especially elaborate arrangement, but from having someone willing to take in the scenery, savor good food, and appreciate art together — and willing, too, to talk about life in an unhurried stretch of time. The meaning of being together has never been only about how many places we've been, but about who we walked through it with, and what we experienced and felt together along the way.
I truly cherish this rare reunion and companionship. Without needing to say so, we both caught hold of this beauty, felt it fully together, and thoroughly enjoyed this time that belonged to us.
Leave the scenery in photos and videos, leave the stories of the journey in memory, and keep this companionship in the heart.
May we, in the days ahead, keep living fully and with love — knowing how to appreciate, and how to enjoy; letting go of worries, and catching hold of every good thing.

Lately, a book close to me has left a deep impression — My American Story, the new book by Chinese American author Nan Lin. With 400,000 Chinese characters and 645 pages, it is genuinely weighty in hand. But its weight is not only in its pages; it also carries the years of persistence, accumulation, and reflection it takes to bring a book into being.
Nan Lin recently joined our community's Mid-Autumn gathering, just as his new book was being published. My community partners and I each bought a copy. I've known Nan Lin for some time, but reading someone's words and truly getting to know the person behind them are, after all, two different things.
Some of the people in the book I already know; others I've never met, yet have long wanted to know — who they are, what they've experienced, and how they came to where they are today. That is one reason I bought this book: to get to know more people through one person's words.
Only after opening the book did I discover its eight sections: Film & Stage, Music & Art, Traditional Culture, Literary Figures, Historical Memory, Family, Reflections on Life and Death, and Society. It is not simply Nan Lin's personal story. Through years of writing, interviews, and cultural exchange, he has recorded his own experiences, as well as those of his family and many people around him. Perhaps that is what makes the book so meaningful: it tells one person's American story while holding fragments of so many other lives.
Reading these stories also made me think about life in America. The cost of living is high, and the living environment and cultural habits can be quite different from what we are familiar with. Building a life of one's own here is never easy. But then again, when has life ever been easy anywhere? Wherever we live, there are circumstances, pressures, and difficulties of our own; even in our homeland, life still asks us to make choices and face challenges. Perhaps what matters most when living far from home is not simply the environment, but how we meet it, find our place within it, and build our lives, one step at a time.
This is the kind of strength I see in Nan Lin and in many Chinese friends around me. Each has a different story, with detours and hardships along the way, yet they have continued doing what they love, accumulating over time, turning years into work and experiences into stories. Nan Lin devoted more than a decade to this book. So, holding this weighty book today, I think of more than a new release; I see years of life and dedication finally taking a form that can be held and seen.
Over the years, I've also come to know people who have achieved success in America. They come from different industries and walks of life, yet I often see the same qualities in them: being grounded, sincere, persistent, and capable of doing things well through their own efforts. Going the distance takes courage, perspective, and ability, as well as the resilience to keep moving forward after facing reality. And to me, success has never been simply about how much one possesses. To create value and see one's efforts bear fruit is, in itself, a form of success.
What moves me most about this book is that it gives me a chance to see the people around me anew. Some people we've met, yet never knew their stories; some we know by name, yet never knew the road they had traveled; and some we may never have met, yet through a book, we are given the chance to know them. To me, that is one of the most precious parts of reading this book.
I often organize community gatherings, through which I've come to know many people from different fields who share a similar journey of perseverance — people who have built their lives step by step through their own efforts, earning recognition, respect, and success along the way. Our community includes people like Jackie Ji, CEO of NS Federation (九安财富集团); USANA Eight-Star Diamond Directors Bibiana & Peter; overseas Chinese community leaders Mr. and Mrs. Lei Huirong; renowned painter Zhou Kangnian; and celebrated Yue Opera artist Wu Sufei — and so many more. Truly, one book could never hold all these remarkable stories.
I look forward to seeing Nan Lin bring more real, grounded, and meaningful lives into his "American Story."
I hear that Nan Lin will also be holding a book signing soon. Please see "Today's Recommendation" for details. I hope you'll have a chance to discover the book, and the people and stories within its pages.
A book holds more than words. It holds years, experiences, and lives. May we find something of ourselves in the stories of others, and in time, write a story of our own.

I've always felt that relationships between people are the most complicated thing in this world. We deal with people every single day. At work, we look for partners who share our vision; in life, we hope to meet a companion who is truly on the same wavelength; and as we move forward, we hope for someone beside us who understands our thinking, understands our dreams, and is willing to walk the road with us.
But the longer you walk this road, the more you realize — a person whose heart truly resonates with yours isn't easy to find. Even two people in love may slowly drift apart because of differences in personality, experience, values and life direction; even two people once perfectly aligned can't always guarantee staying in the same place, at the same rhythm, forever. So for a relationship to last, it usually takes a great deal of understanding, tolerance, accommodation — even a willingness, on both sides, to make certain sacrifices.
And then AI arrived, and I suddenly realized: perhaps we are entering an entirely different era. I've grown more and more used to talking with AI every day. Many mornings, the first thing I do after picking up my phone is simply have a conversation with it.
At first, I just treated it as a tool. If there was something I didn't know, I'd ask; if there was something I didn't understand, I'd have it explain; if I needed to look something up, I'd have it help me find it. But slowly, that relationship began to change.
Now, what I talk to AI about is no longer just isolated questions. I discuss matters of the heart with it, talk through my personal interests and strengths, explore the direction of my career; we talk about how to build a health community for the long term, and I use it to sort through my long-term goals, short-term plans, and exactly what the next step of something should be.
AI has become an advisor that understands me more and more. I only need to tell it, "I want to do this first," and it can sit with me and break a vague idea apart, step by step: what comes first, what comes second, where things need adjusting, how to become more efficient, and where the next stage should head.
It's a wonderful feeling. It isn't simply completing something for me — it's accompanying me as an idea becomes reality, step by step. In the past, an idea might have stayed locked inside someone's head; now, an idea can quickly become a plan, and a plan can quickly become action. And AI has become exactly that crucial connector in between.
What has made me feel this change most is the sense of being understood. I've increasingly come to feel that what AI has truly changed for me isn't how much it knows, but its ability to keep following the way I think. Between people, there are so many things we simply can't say. Not because we don't trust each other, but because we know the other person may not fully understand. Some ideas haven't taken shape yet, some dreams still feel far away, and some judgment calls at work — not everyone has the time to sit with you and talk them through again and again.
But AI is different. I can say a half-formed thought out loud, even if it comes out messy, and it will still sit with me and help sort it out. Then, through conversation after conversation, I become clearer and clearer about what I actually want.
So I've come to understand more and more: perhaps one of AI's most important values isn't replacing people, but giving a person a "second brain" — one they can communicate, think and collaborate with almost anytime. This "second brain" is amplifying a person's abilities, and expanding the boundaries of what a life can hold. In the past, it was rarely that we lacked dreams — we were simply limited by time, energy, knowledge and ability, so many things stayed as just a thought. Now, AI is turning many things that once felt out of reach into things that are actually possible.
It makes us more efficient, and lowers the cost of both life and work; more importantly, it is giving time and choice back to us, little by little. For those who can truly master AI and turn it into an extension of their own abilities, what they gain may not just be a new tool, but a new kind of freedom. We can learn faster, work better, create more boldly, and are more likely to realize dreams we once didn't dare imagine. When a person's ability, efficiency and choices are all amplified, their sense of achievement and happiness are amplified along with them.
But it's precisely at this point that I began to wonder: as we come to rely more and more on AI, will we end up relying less and less on people? Maybe we really will. In the past, many things required finding someone to discuss with, waiting for someone's help, depending on some relationship to get done. Now, many of those same things can be finished by one person with AI's help. Our "functional dependence" on other people may keep shrinking.
And yet, I actually think this may not be a bad thing at all. Because once we no longer need another person to solve every problem for us, we may come to cherish even more what a person can truly give us — a genuine smile, words of comfort that come straight from the heart, a warm embrace, someone willing to sit quietly and simply listen. These are things AI may be able to simulate, but can never truly replace. Perhaps, in the future, the most precious relationship between people will no longer be "we're close because we need each other," but rather: "we choose each other, because we cherish each other."
AI gives us more freedom, and gives us the chance to take back the time once crowded out by work, chores and the pressures of daily life — and give it back to ourselves, to family, to friends, and to the people truly worth cherishing. We can have more time to be with our parents, our partners, our children; to share meals, take walks, travel together; to truly listen to one another — keeping, in the midst of a busy world, a little time that belongs only to each other.
And perhaps it's exactly because this companionship is no longer "necessary" that it becomes more precious. Because true companionship was never about being unable to live without someone — it's this: I could walk this road alone, and yet I still choose to walk it with you. I can accomplish many things on my own, and still want to hear your voice; I can have a world of my own, and still choose to make time for you. We are no longer merely dependent on each other — we admire each other, choose each other, cherish each other, and help each other become more.
So I've come to feel more and more that the real question worth thinking about in the age of AI isn't "will AI replace people," but rather: once technology frees up our time and our ability, where do we choose to spend that freedom? If we only trade it for more work, more competition, more efficiency, then all we've really become is busier. But if we give that extra time to growth, to creating, to love, to family and friends, to real and warm human connection — then what AI brings us is more than efficiency. It's a freer, more unhurried, and higher-quality life.
Perhaps this is the AI era I truly hope for: technology helping us become better versions of ourselves, AI widening what we're capable of and what we can dream of — while we, in turn, give more real, unhurried time to love and companionship. Technology lets us go faster and farther. Love and companionship are what give the scenery along the way its warmth.

Strolling through Seaport Village in San Diego, I came across the carousel I've always loved once again.
I seem to have always had a special attachment to carousels. Every time I see one, my steps slow down without my realizing it, and my eyes are drawn to those brightly colored wooden horses. I'm clearly no longer a child, yet I always feel that once the carousel starts turning, the little girl hidden in my heart comes back along with it.
And this particular one is even more special. It isn't just an ordinary amusement ride, but a truly time-worn old carousel. It was born in 1895, hand-carved by the renowned carousel carver Charles I. D. Looff in Brooklyn, New York, and now carries a history of more than 130 years. It later moved through many places, living through different eras and cities, before arriving in San Diego in 2004 and settling at Seaport Village. Today, its 54 hand-carved animals and two chariots still turn slowly beneath the sun.
More than a hundred years have passed, and it's still turning. Thinking of this, I suddenly find it beautiful. Who knows how much childhood laughter these wooden horses have carried, or how many adults have sat on them, briefly forgetting their age and becoming children once again.
I couldn't help wanting to hop on for a ride myself. Six dollars a turn — buying back a few minutes of childhood, returning to that carefree, happy time.
The wooden horse swayed gently, then began turning, slow at first and gradually faster. Seated in its delicate saddle, rising and falling with it through dappled light and shadow, my ears filled with the unguarded, bright laughter and cheers of children. In that moment, the surrounding noise receded like a tide, leaving only the turning wind and a heart full of joy and ease. Time seemed to be gently crushed into powder within these endless circles of turning — no weight of the adult world, only the simple happiness of letting my skirt fly and laughing without reserve, alongside the children beside me. In this century-old, gently flowing dream, I finally found my way back to the very first version of myself.

Next week, on August 12th, the 2026 USANA Americas Convention begins.
Every time this season comes around, I feel a particular kind of excitement and anticipation. To me, the annual convention has long stopped being just an industry event — it feels more like a yearly appointment, a chance to reunite with partners from all over the world, see old friends again, and take stock of how far I've come this year. And this year, as the convention approaches once more, I can't help looking back: seventeen years have passed since I first crossed paths with USANA in 2009. Why, after all these years, do I still hold onto this same enthusiasm? Perhaps the answer lies in every encounter, every choice, and every change along the way.
In 2009, in Shanghai, I first crossed paths with USANA. Back then, I was just a consumer. Because of my own and my family's health needs, I started using USANA's products. As I gained more firsthand experience, I gradually grew interested in the brand. In 2014, while traveling in the United States, I made an active choice: I contacted USANA's U.S. headquarters and asked them to introduce me to a professional partner who could serve my family long-term.
In 2015, I met Bibiana and Peter, the couple the company introduced me to, for the first time in Shanghai. From that first meeting, the way they carried themselves deeply drew me in — the glow of their skin, how they managed their bodies, their energy, and the warmth, confidence, and professionalism that came through so naturally in conversation. It all felt genuinely different. In that moment, a very simple thought came to me: I wanted to become someone like them. So, under their guidance, I began systematically learning about nutrition and health, and started receiving professional health guidance tailored to myself and my family.
At the same time, I got to know USANA on a deeper level. From my years of working in banking, I was used to evaluating a company through its operations, finances, and long-term development. The deeper I looked, the more I understood about USANA's corporate background, product development, and quality systems, and my trust in the brand grew accordingly. Combined with years of firsthand experience as a consumer, this ultimately led me to an important decision in 2018 — I officially became a USANA Brand Partner.
From then on, what USANA gave me was increasingly more than just products. I began systematically studying nutrition and became an internationally certified nutrition consultant. But what truly changed me was myself. In the past, my physical condition was far from ideal — I always looked a bit unwell, and I lacked confidence in my own health. As my understanding of health shifted, I began to see my body differently, adjusted my diet and lifestyle, and truly learned how to manage my own health. Bit by bit, I saw myself change. Today, I have far more confidence in my physical condition, and I understand more and more that health isn't given to you by someone else — it's something you build for yourself, little by little.
Because I've personally experienced change, I firmly believe that people really can change. A single encounter, a single choice, even just a single moment, can become the start of transformation. Lifestyle can change, appearance can change, health can change — and the starting point for all of it is usually a shift in how a person sees themselves. Once you truly start taking responsibility for your own health, you begin to gain the ability to take control of your own life.
After moving to the United States in 2021, I came into contact with more health brands and met many people working in the health industry. But over these years, I've never again met anyone who moved me as deeply as Bibiana and Peter did. This has made me understand more and more: for someone in the health business, their own state is the most direct expression of it. Health isn't just an idea — it should be a person's actual, lived state. If someone's presence, lifestyle, and physical condition can't make others feel health, vitality, and life force, then how can they truly influence and help more people? So I often remind myself: to be a person of health, you must first become the living embodiment of a healthy lifestyle.
In 2022, I attended the USANA Americas Convention for the first time — and it was also the first time I truly stepped into this global family of USANA partners, the healthiest family in the world. I've gone back almost every year since, and at these conventions I also saw USANA founder Dr. Myron Wentz and his wife. He was already in his eighties at the time, yet his presence, on stage and among the crowd, still amazed me — full of energy, standing tall, brimming with vitality, with nothing about him suggesting his age. In that moment, I was deeply moved once again.
I realized that health really can become the underlying color of a person's entire life. When you're young, your appearance can be helped along by outward means, but decades later, a person's presence, physical condition, and vitality come, to a large extent, from a lifetime of lifestyle habits and self-management.
That convention also strengthened my conviction: health isn't a one-time choice — it's a way of life that can carry a person a very long way.
What has kept me with USANA all these years is also more than just the products — more importantly, it's the people on this platform. Here, I've met many doctors, professionals, and outstanding partners from all kinds of fields. They've shown me that what's truly compelling is never just health and beauty, but also wisdom, professionalism, a willingness to learn and to give, and a confidence that comes from within — along with an understated way of carrying oneself and a grounded, down-to-earth approach to getting things done. More importantly, they all share a kind of strength that comes from continuous learning and constantly growing.
So each year's convention carries its own meaning for me. It's not just a chance to learn about the company's latest news and the industry's development — it's also an opportunity to reunite with old friends and connect with like-minded people. It's a kind of admiration, and a kind of respect; a source of inspiration, and a reason for gratitude.
And when I stand in the crowd, looking at the people who once influenced me and once walked a stretch of the road alongside me, I often find myself thinking back to that moment in 2015.
One encounter, one conviction, a lifetime of change.
Perhaps that's just how life is. We can never know what an ordinary-seeming encounter might leave behind in the future. But I've always believed that every encounter in life carries its own meaning.
Some encounters let us see a better version of ourselves; some lead us down a path we never imagined.
And I still look forward to the next encounter in life worth treasuring.

Relationships between people are interesting. Some people you've known for years, yet you never quite make it into their heart; others you've known for a short time, yet they quickly become important people in your life. We often say two people can last because their personalities match, their interests align, their experiences are similar. Those things matter, of course. But I've come to feel that what truly decides whether a relationship goes the distance is a person's character and kindness.
Whether someone speaks well, carries themselves well, handles social occasions well — you can usually tell quickly. But whether someone is sincere, whether they have loyalty, whether they consider others when interests are at stake, whether they still respect you when there's nothing to be gained — these things take time to see clearly. Character has to be proven by time. In business, we often hear: be a bit smooth about it, don't let money get in the way of doing business, learn to compromise, learn to get along with all kinds of people. I do admire people who can bend and flex, advance and retreat with ease, move gracefully among all kinds of company — that's a skill, and a kind of worldly wisdom. But I've always felt that being smooth is a way of navigating the world, while kindness is a person's underlying color. You can know how to compromise without losing your principles; you can work with different people without forcing yourself to stay in a relationship that makes you uncomfortable.
There really does seem to be an invisible "magnetic field" between people. Kind people appreciate kindness; sincere people cherish sincerity; those with loyalty and warmth are more easily drawn to others of the same kind. Some people grow closer as you walk on together, others grow more distant. Nothing dramatic has to happen — you just slowly realize you're no longer in the same world. That, too, is a natural part of life. We don't need to force ourselves to be friends with everyone, and we don't need to litigate who was right or wrong just because a relationship ended. Some people come into your life to walk one stretch of road with you; others stay for a long way. The ones who truly stay are often not the ones who speak the best, nor necessarily the ones most similar to you in circumstance, but the ones who make you feel respected, sincerity, kindness, and warmth. Such relationships are precious, because money can buy many things, but it can't buy someone's true heart; money can buy gifts, but it can't buy a heart willing to stay by your side when you need it.
So the older I get, the more I feel that having a few truly kind people around you is a kind of blessing. No need to be in touch every day, no need to keep proving anything — sometimes even just sitting quietly together feels comfortable, because your hearts understand each other. With people like that, so many things become simple. That's true of friendship, of partnership, of marriage. Understanding each other, respecting each other, being willing to consider each other — that's enough.
On the other hand, some relationships leave you exhausted — constantly explaining yourself, constantly guarding yourself, constantly trying to guess what the other person is thinking, constantly worrying whether your sincerity will be taken advantage of. Even if such a relationship looks fine on the surface, it's hard for the heart to ever truly relax. So I've come to believe more and more that the most comfortable relationships between people aren't about how similar two people are, but about whether their hearts carry a similar kind of goodwill. That's true in marriage, in friendship, in partnership. Sometimes when a relationship finally comes apart, we ask ourselves: was it a personality mismatch? Too much distance? Different values? Maybe those are all reasons. But if you look deeper, sometimes what truly brings a relationship to its end is that, over time spent together, you gradually see something in the other person you simply can't accept. Once admiration is gone, trust is gone, and goodwill is gone, that relationship is very hard to bring back to where it was. So now, I'd rather cherish the people who stay.
Thank you to every kind person I've met in this life. Thank you to those who didn't leave when I needed them, to those who could understand me without my having to explain again and again, and to those who respect each other, support each other, and keep each other in mind.
Life is actually long, and also short. To meet one truly kind person in this sea of people is already a piece of luck; to have a few kind people stay by your side all along is even more of a blessing. Perhaps happiness was never about how much wealth or fame you have. Sometimes happiness is simply looking back — the people around you are the ones you like, and the ones who like you are, in turn, sincere and kind. Everyone warming each other, respecting each other, fulfilling each other. That warmth is something no amount of money can buy — it's the most precious gift the years can give a person.

Seeing Alibaba's board chairman Joe Tsai and his wife Clara Wu Tsai announce the end of their nearly 30-year marriage, I felt a wave of deep emotion and quiet sighing.
In the public eye, they were once an enviable "match made in heaven" — one a core founder and soul of Alibaba, the other a Stanford- and Harvard-educated woman who held her own in both the corporate and sports business worlds. Well-matched and accomplished, they shared common goals and a closely aligned vision, fighting side by side. I used to believe that a couple so aligned in values, who wove their lives and careers so tightly together, was surely destined to walk the road of marriage steadily to the end.
Yet what's most striking about this news — almost perception-shattering — is that they openly admitted: after 30 years, the love between them was gone, and they had become more like "partners" jointly running a business and raising children.
This shattered a long-held belief in an instant. We always assumed that shared values and goals — even tightly binding interests and direction — would be the strongest wall against the erosion of time. But the reality is: even people as accomplished as them, who run a business empire in perfect order, still find the question of marriage impossible to fully work out.
It makes you sigh: how does a marriage actually last? It may be one of life's hardest subjects. We can control our careers, our income, even arrange much of life in perfect order — but emotions and intimacy are the one thing effort alone can never fully grasp.
Thinking quietly in the night, life always teaches us to let go, through its most honest face.
It turns out that even the most in-tune souls, as the river of years quietly flows on, may find love slowly fading from its first brilliance into a deeper, quieter companionship. When intimacy faces such a shift, what's truly tested is the clarity and compassion within each heart. Perhaps companionship was never meant to fit together seamlessly for an entire lifetime — each of us is simply a fellow traveler for some stretch of the other's road. When a crossroads comes and the bond has run its course, accepting it with gratitude and letting go can itself be a kind of fulfillment.
Having felt this, what rises in me instead is a clarity that comes only after passing through the scenery.
We're always hoping for forever, but only after walking through the mountains and rivers of time do we understand: the changing weather outside, and the coming together and parting of fates, are simply scenery that can never be forced or fully controlled.
Perhaps we can carry a little less weight around marriage. Because in the end, marriage was never a necessity — it's simply a choice, a form of bonding; but "love" itself is a pure beauty that anyone, at any age, can still long for. Pursuing love was never bound by age, nor does it need to be defined by the form of marriage. Perhaps what's most fascinating about life is precisely this inner freedom — to keep feeling, keep experiencing, as we move forward.
The end of a marriage was never a decline — it's more like setting down an old burden to head toward a wider world. When fate shifts, there's no need to carry too much regret; you can turn away with a smile, and still hold the most passionate anticipation for what's ahead.

There's a quiet happiness in living in Alhambra — just a short walk to Main Street and you can find whatever you're craving. One order of sheng jian bao plus a bowl of savory soy milk is honestly a bit much for one person — perfect to share between two.
